grep version 2.12 --include --exclude is broken

Given the following directory structure:
echo abc > foo.e
echo abc > bar.e
echo abc > dog.e
echo abc > thisnot.a

The following used to show the every line containing abc in *.e files EXCEPT for foo.e.
$ ./grep --include="*.e" --exclude="foo.e" abc *
bar.e:abc
dog.e:abc

However, now it ignores the --include and also shows thisnot.a
$ ./grep --include="*.e" --exclude="foo.e" abc *
bar.e:abc
dog.e:abc
thisnot.a
